Effects of the Combinations of Ginseng with Green Tea and Coriander on the Prohibition of E. coli Growth

The purpose of this experiment was to find how combinations of antioxidants with an antibacterial would effect the growth of E. coli. The problem was to see which combination of ginseng with green tea or coriander would prohibit the growth of E. coli the best. It was hypothesized that ginseng combined with coriander would result in the least amount of E. coli growth measured by the number of colonies present on the agar. E. coli has become a problem in today’s agricultural industry. It can be found in beef and any foods contaminated by feces. The result from this would be that the companies have to recall their products, halt production, and essentially waste millions of dollars. If a simple natural precautionary substance was found, people could easily protect themselves from an E. coli infection. Combinations of ginseng with green tea and ginseng with coriander were put into agar and poured into 30 Petri dishes each. E. coli bacteria was then placed on top of the agar and placed into an incubator. After 24 hours, the colonies of E. coli were counted. The result from the 2-sample t-test had a p-value of about 0.15, which means there is a 1.5% chance that the results would have been due to chance alone if there was a zero difference between the groups. The hypothesis was rejected, since the experiment results were that ginseng combined with green tea significantly had the best effect to prohibit the growth of E. coli. To help the body prohibit E. coli the most, it would be beneficial to take ginseng and green tea capsules.
